Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about our drum lessons, teaching methods, and what to expect when you join Vohira.

We welcome students from 6 years old through to adults of all ages. Our youngest learners start with specially adapted kits and techniques suited to smaller hands and developing coordination. For adults, whether you're a complete beginner or returning after years away, we tailor lessons to your pace and goals. Each age group benefits from teaching methods designed specifically for their developmental stage and learning style.

No, you don't need your own kit initially. Our studio provides professional-grade acoustic and electronic kits for all lessons. However, having a practice pad or kit at home significantly accelerates progress. We can advise on suitable options for your budget and living situation, from quiet practice pads for flats to full acoustic kits. Many students start with just sticks and a practice pad, which costs around £30-50, then upgrade as they progress.

Most students can play simple beats and patterns within 4-6 weeks of regular weekly lessons. After 3-4 months, you'll typically manage basic songs and understand fundamental rhythm concepts. The timeline varies based on practice frequency, natural coordination, and previous musical experience. Students who practice 20-30 minutes daily progress noticeably faster than those practicing once or twice weekly. Within a year of consistent lessons and practice, most students play along with recordings and perform in group settings.

We cover rock, pop, jazz, funk, blues, Latin, and metal styles, plus rudiments and technique applicable across genres. Lessons begin with foundational skills that work for any style, then branch into your preferred genres. Our instructors have performed professionally in various settings, from jazz clubs to rock venues, bringing real-world experience to each lesson. Whether you want to play along with your favourite bands or explore different musical territories, we adapt the curriculum to your interests.

Standard lessons run 30, 45, or 60 minutes depending on age and level. Younger children typically start with 30-minute sessions, while teenagers and adults often benefit from 45-60 minute lessons. We recommend weekly attendance for consistent progress, though fortnightly lessons work for some schedules. Regular weekly lessons with daily home practice yield the best results. You can choose morning, afternoon, or evening slots to fit around school, work, or other commitments.

We offer both individual and small group lessons. Private lessons provide focused attention on your specific needs and progress at your own pace. Group sessions (maximum 4 students of similar level) cost less per person and build ensemble skills, though individual progress may be slower. Some students combine both formats, taking private lessons for technique development and joining group sessions for performance experience. We'll help you choose the format that matches your learning style and goals.

All instructors hold professional drumming qualifications and have at least 5 years of teaching experience. Our team includes graduates from music conservatoires, active session musicians, and performers with extensive stage and studio credits. Each instructor undergoes enhanced DBS checks and holds public liability insurance. Beyond formal qualifications, they bring diverse musical backgrounds from touring bands to orchestral percussion, offering students exposure to various professional perspectives and techniques.

Yes, we prepare students for Rockschool and Trinity College London drum examinations from Grade 1 through Grade 8 and beyond. Exam preparation integrates naturally into regular lessons, covering required technical work, pieces, and sight-reading. We have a 95% pass rate with many students achieving merit and distinction grades. Exams are optional; some students prefer them for structured progression and certification, while others focus purely on playing for enjoyment. We support whichever path suits your goals.

Your first lesson includes an assessment of any previous experience, discussion of musical interests and goals, and introduction to the kit and basic technique. You'll learn proper stick grip, posture, and play simple patterns on the snare and bass drum. We'll establish a practice routine and answer any questions about equipment or expectations. There's no pressure to perform; this session helps us understand how you learn best and design a curriculum that keeps you engaged and progressing steadily.

Yes, we provide live online lessons via video call for students who prefer learning from home or cannot travel to our London location. Online lessons work well for intermediate and advanced students with their own kits, though beginners benefit more from in-person instruction where the teacher can physically guide hand position and technique. Online students receive the same curriculum and attention as in-studio learners. You'll need a drum kit or practice pad, stable internet connection, and device with camera positioned to show your hands and kit clearly.

We require 24 hours notice for cancellations or rescheduling. Lessons cancelled with proper notice can be rescheduled within the same term or credited to your account. Cancellations with less than 24 hours notice are charged at full rate, except for genuine emergencies or sudden illness. We understand that schedules change, particularly for families, and work flexibly to accommodate your needs while maintaining fair booking practices. Instructors occasionally need to reschedule due to professional commitments; in such cases, we offer alternative times or substitute teachers.

We recommend 20-30 minutes of practice 5-6 days per week for steady progress. Younger children might manage 10-15 minutes daily initially, building stamina gradually. Quality matters more than quantity; focused practice on specific exercises yields better results than unfocused longer sessions. Your instructor will set clear weekly practice goals covering technique, reading, and repertoire. Even 10 minutes daily maintains progress between lessons. Students who practice regularly notice improvements each week, while irregular practice leads to slower advancement and repeated material.

We organise student concerts twice yearly at local venues, giving you experience playing for an audience in a supportive environment. Additionally, we run ensemble workshops where drummers join with guitarists, bassists, and vocalists from other local music schools. These sessions build confidence, timing, and the ability to play with others rather than just along to recordings. Performance is optional but highly recommended, as playing for others accelerates learning and adds enjoyment. Many students find these events highlight their progress and motivate continued practice.

Initially, you need only drumsticks (£8-15) and optionally a practice pad (£15-35) for home practice. As you progress, consider a metronome or metronome app (free to £20), and method books recommended by your instructor (£10-20 each). If you decide to purchase a kit, entry-level options start around £300-400 for acoustic sets or £200-300 for electronic kits suitable for flats. We provide detailed buying guides and can accompany you to music shops to ensure you choose appropriate equipment for your level and budget.

Each student has a progress log where instructors note topics covered, areas for improvement, and practice assignments. We conduct informal assessments every 6-8 weeks to review development and adjust teaching approaches as needed. Parents of younger students receive termly written reports and can request updates anytime. For exam students, we track progress against syllabus requirements. You'll always know what you're working towards and how you're advancing. Regular feedback ensures you understand your strengths and areas needing attention, maintaining motivation and clear direction.

Absolutely. Many of our adult students start with zero musical experience and progress to playing in bands or for personal enjoyment. Adults often learn efficiently due to focused practice, clear goals, and understanding of how to learn. While children may develop coordination more naturally, adults bring discipline and patience that accelerates progress in other areas. We've taught complete beginners in their 40s, 50s, and beyond who now perform regularly. Starting as an adult simply means a different learning journey, not a limited one.

We combine structured technical development with music you actually want to play. Rather than spending months on exercises alone, you'll apply new techniques to songs and patterns that interest you from early lessons. This keeps motivation high while building solid fundamentals. Our instructors adapt to different learning styles, whether you're visual, auditory, or kinaesthetic. We break complex skills into manageable steps, celebrate progress, and maintain realistic expectations. The balance between challenge and achievement keeps students engaged long-term rather than overwhelmed or bored.

Yes, we integrate relevant theory into practical lessons rather than teaching it separately. You'll learn to read drum notation, understand time signatures, note values, dynamics, and how rhythm relates to melody and harmony. This knowledge is introduced gradually as it becomes useful for the music you're playing. For exam students, we cover theory requirements specific to each grade. Understanding theory makes you a more versatile musician who can learn new material faster, communicate with other musicians effectively, and eventually create your own patterns and arrangements.

Contact us via phone at +44 20 7496 0123 or email [email protected] to arrange your trial lesson. We'll discuss your goals, experience level, and preferred schedule, then book a convenient time at our studio at 15 Willow Walk, London SE1 5SF. Trial lessons last 30 minutes and give you a feel for our teaching style and facilities. There's no obligation to continue, though most students book regular lessons after their trial. We're open Monday to Friday 9:00-18:00 and Saturday 10:00-14:00, with lessons available throughout these hours.

What Our Students Say

Feedback from drummers who have learned with us at Vohira in London and beyond

The teaching method here focuses on practical application rather than just theory, which suited my learning style. I particularly valued the emphasis on proper stick grip and posture from day one. After eight weeks of weekly sessions, I noticed significant improvement in my timing and coordination. The £45 per hour rate is reasonable for the London area, though I did find the initial assessment fee of £25 slightly unexpected as it wasn't prominently mentioned during booking.

Sophie Clarke

Birmingham

Solid instruction with knowledgeable tutors who clearly understand drumming fundamentals. The curriculum covers essential techniques including paradiddles, double strokes, and basic jazz patterns. I've been attending for two months and can see progress in my hand speed. However, I expected more variety in musical styles during lessons – the focus tends to be heavily on rock and pop, with limited exploration of funk or Latin rhythms unless specifically requested. The facility itself is clean and the equipment is maintained properly.
